United Nations Human Rights Treaties
Governments around the world have adopted a series of international human rights treaties that establish the fundamental rights and freedoms possessed by every individual. Indonesia has signed and ratified (agreed to follow) seven of the nine core UN human rights treaties.
Although the rights contained in these treaties cannot be directly enforced in Indonesian courts, they constitute binding obligations under international law.
By agreeing to follow these treaties, Indonesia has promised to ensure that it respects, protects, and fulfills the human rights standards contained within them. Indonesia has not yet agreed to follow the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families or the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.
The Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) has published information about some of Indonesia's international human rights obligations and its reports to the UN.
